Broadband Checklist

High speed, also known as "Broadband" is an Internet connection delivered through cable modems, fiber-to-home, or dsl modem service. It does not use the dial-up modem located within most modern computers. Computers sold within the last four years generally meet the minimum software and hardware requirements for high speed service. New subscribers should review the information below to verify their computers meet the minimum specifications for service.

Here's a checklist of what is needed to get started:

• Cable Modem or other High Speed connection device
• Wired Setup:
  • Connection Cord: Ethernet Cord or USB Cord
  • Network Card installed on computer (if using Ethernet)
  • USB Port on computer(Windows 2000 and above)
• Wireless Setup:
  • Wireless Router
  • Ethernet cord (for first connection)
  • Wireless Adapter or card (if not already installed on computer(s)
• Computer Operating System:
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows ME
  • Windows 98
  • Mac OS X
  • Mac OS 8+
  • Linux
  • RAM: 128mb (recommended)
  • Processor: 386 MHz (recommended)
  • CD drive (recommended)

  Software:

  • Drivers: CD for USB connection (name of cable modem on CD) or network card if not yet installed
  • Web Browser: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Safari (Macintosh) or other browser
  • Anti-virus Program and Firewall (recommended)
  • If your ISP offers a self-install CD or website, save the box the modem and CD was shipped in. Your shipping label may be used during the installation process.
